The short answer is yes.

You need to set the com port up in Linux to be a terminal device, and
you will need to set HyperTerm to the correct settings to talk.  

The big question is why don't you use a network to achieve this, and run
the linux system headless.  All you need to do is tell the BIOS not to
halt on errors, so that it will get past the point that the keyboard
error comes up.  

You can get NICs with RTL-8139 chipsets for under $25, and they work
well with linux for a cheap card, and they work well in windows.  Use a
cross-over cable to connect them if they are your only 2 computers.
