Bingo, that solves the problem.. XDMCP is not enabled in KDM or GDM by
default.

How is using XDMCP to view an entire desktop an abuse? Is that what an X
Server is designed to do? I don't think the bandwith usage is that
high... I happen to think the VNC server on Linux isn't very nice to
work with, I'd much rather have my Ximian Desktop...

Have you configured /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and changed the line:
 [xdmcp]     
Enable=false 

to 
Enable=true

Not sure if more is required, or if the problem is elsewhere...
