Dial-up would be pretty poor performance if five or more users were on at
once.  Two or three usually manage pretty well unless they're downloading or
browsing heavy graphics at the same time, but more than that and you do take
quite a hit.

Then again, we share 512K with around 90 users here, and it's slow but not
impossible.

I used a pretty low-end system for my dial-up router, if you don't need to
run squid and mail servers (why duplicate what you're already paying for?)
you can get away with a P100 for NAT/Firewall without a measurable
performance hit.
