A lot of the CMOS Configureable Novell-branded and 3Com ISA Ethernet cards I
encountered in the early 90's defaulted to 3.  Stupid but true.  Fortunately
most serial ports were on removable cards then, which was good because the
configuration software couldn't see a card if there was a conflict.
