NIC Setup

I'm new to Linux as I have said before and I'm trying to setup my NIC...
AMD PCI PCnet32 (PCI bus NE2100)

I really want to switch 100% to Linux but I'm really having doubts...

I got some commands from a guy I work with that knows Linux
But they never seem to work.

I'm running SuSE 6.3/KDE and I've tried YaST to no avail.

make menuconfig
network
make clean;make bzImage

cp /vmlinuz /vmlinuz.bak
cp arch8/boot/x86/bzImage
/vmlinuz

I can't get past make menuconfig.
I type it and press enter and I get the following
make: *** No rule to make target 'menuconfig'. Stop.

What am I doing wrong????

Could I get someone in the KC area to give me a call?????
