[KULUA EVENT] KULUA vs Win2k -- UPDATE (fwd)

Guess what? We're going to crash Microsoft's party. KULUA is going to
have an event outside of the Microsoft Windows2000 launch event.

What are we going to do? Give out free CDs and answer questions. Hobnob
with journalists and MCSEs. Maybe get some free Microsoft swag. :-)

Event details:
--------------

When:	5:00pm CST to approximately 8:30pm CST on Thursday, February 17th
Where:	Bartle Exposition Hall, downtown Kansas City

We are meeting on the north side of Bartle Hall. People are encouraged to
wear warm clothes, as it will probably be chilly. Also, a bag or backpack
wouldn't be a bad idea. Bringing a snack and a bottle of water would be
prudent, too.

Here's a MapQuest URL for Bartle Exposition Hall:

Here's the street address:
Bartle Exposition Hall
301 West 13th Street
Kansas City, MO 64105

To be honest, if you can get to downtown KC, you can get to Bartle Hall.
It's the HUGE building with the four weird pieces of art on its pillars.

After the event:
----------------

After the event dies down (or if it gets too cold or rains), we will be
going to dinner at Fuddruckers in Shawnee Mission for dinner and
conversation.

Here's Fuddruckers' address:
8725 Metcalf Ave
Shawnee Mission, KS 66212

Advocacy:
---------

People, remember, we are NOT at this event to bash Microsoft. We are
there to promote Linux and Free software in general. So, we are to
de-emphasize the Microsoft vs. Linux angle and intead tell people when
asked that we are there simply to present to people an alternative to
Microsoft's Windows2000. We need to focus on why we like Linux, and not
on why we may not like Windows. Please let Dustin or I handle any press
or notables (such as Microsoft personnel).

I'm not looking to censor what you say, but remember, many eyes will be on
us. If we're happy and helpful and informative, we'll make a very
positive impression on people. If we seem to be a noisy bunch of
riff-raff, we'll make the Free software movement look bad.

As said before, the Advocacy mini-HOWTO is a great read:

Miscellaneous:
--------------

You can get written directions from the MapQuest URLs.

DOOR PRIZES!!! KULUA has lots of swag... er door prizes to give out to
KULUA members attending this event. First of all, all members attending
will get a cool Tux the penguin pin courtesy of TurboLinux. We would like
everyone to wear one at the event to identify KULUA members.

Other door prizes include _many_ Red Hat T-shirts, Red Hat 6.1 Deluxe
boxed sets, a SuSE 6.3 boxed set, cool TurboLinux retractable card-key
holders, RHCE 10% off coupons, posters, stickers, microwave popcorn (Linux
"kernels"), a really nice black and yellow TurboLinux polo, and much more!

If anyone has any extra Linux or BSD CDROMs, please bring them! Don't
bring really old CDs, or scratched/dirty ones. Also, no burned CDRs. We
can use as many CDs as possible, but we want them to look professional.

All people attending need to get their name on the attendence list at the
event, and at Fuddruckers everyone will draw a number from a hat and pick
in their order. Everyone should get at least two prizes.

You might also want to register with Microsoft for the Win2k event -- it's
free and lets us use the restroom and such.

Also, let me know if you are not on the attached list (or if I've
forgotten anything).

See you Thursday!
Jeffrey.
