Hmmm, not a very friendly response at first. As someone who has made it a
personal mission to welcome newbies and help them learn to use computers, I
can tell you this is not the best response to a request for help.

I don't want to start a flame war here, but as a 20+ year computer geek who
has only been using Linux a year or so, I can tell you that the HOWTO's and
the FAQ's are not always thae best resource for every situation. They are a
great source of information and instruction, but if someone encounters
difficulty using the documentation, nothing beats a little advice from
"liveware" - 'specially when they have been there themseelves.

I have found that most of the documentation presupposes a certain level of
Linux expertise that many of the newbies don't have and the Linux overview
files do not provide. A simple typo like "'route add defualt gw 192.168.1.1'"
if overlooked by the author or the user - can keep a newbie banging their head
against the wall for hours!

     This I know for a FACT!    ;->

The amature radio organization has a loose-knit program where the more
experienced members volunteer to help the newer people when they have
questions. Not everyone is required to be a mentor or even an expert. Those
that do mentor find it to be tremondously rewarding and those that don't wish
to mentor don't bag on anyone for asking for a little guidance.

If we can establish this kind of environment in the Linux community - Linux
will be the dominant OS in no time at all!
