I also had this problem; if you're using init, you ned to recompile it and
re-install it. (this fixed the problem for me.) BTW, I've heard reports that
gcc-2.4.0 is buggy. Get 2.4.3. You might also try telling lilo to start up
linux in single-user mode, i.e. (if your linux config is named 'linux') at
the LILO prompt type "linux single".
