| I did start it as root and it said: "trying to start bash", but did not.

| Perhaps system is not good for that?

system() is very not good for that, I'm pretty sure the Linux version
(like most others) calls /bin/sh with the -c option to do the command
line parse. Change the call to an exec() variant and you should get
going just fine.

Note: my Linux system is dead right now, as I was about to back up and
install a new disk, the old hard disk died. All my DOS and Linux stuff
is gone, back as far as the last backup. Since I'm now on the new disk
I'm going to install the latest SLS and try to get that working. Past
experience has been pretty poor until I recompile the WD8013 driver with
some new options on where to look for the card, and I'm pretty sure the
new net stuff wants different setup than I was using. Bottom line: I'm
unable to try anything right now.
