I just started with linux, and got the SLS-distribution. I've installed
some of it, and was playing with the vga-mode. I copied the image to a
backup one, and changed the image with rdev. Nothing changed, so i
thought i did something wrong. I moved the backupimage back to image.
The next day, my machine wouldn't boot. It had the same problems as you
described. I remembered someting i read, so i went to the /etc/lilo
directory, and executed lilo. Now everything is working again.
So, i suggest you do the same. Go to /etc/lilo and start lilo. That way
you make a new bootblock on your HD. Worked for me so....
