I have answered this far too many times but here goes...
Make sure you have the lines in your /etc/host.conf file
order hosts,bind
multi
This will tell anything using gethostbyname() to look in the hosts file before
the DNS. Obviously the DNS and other IP services cannot be started before you
have the hostname set ... Catch-22 situation.

Forget it, I don't have them either. All you need to set up the network is
'ifconfig', 'route' and 'netstat' programs. Make sure you have at least these.

Read the UUCP manual uucp-doc-1.04.1.tar.gz from your nearest archive site.
(eg: src.doc.ic.ac.uk /gnu/uucp-doc-1.04.1.tar.gz )
