Where to get laptop batteries? Also, Ubuntu deployment at bookstore...
Can anybody point me to a reputable place online (or locally) where I can buy a replacement battery for a Toshiba laptop? This is the first time I've had to replace a laptop battery. I also want to share news that we've set up an Ubuntu network at our bookstore and infoshop at 3109 Troost. We're making available a public Internet access terminal that is running Ubuntu. Our other computers in the building are also running Ubuntu. We also offer free WiFi. Our next project is to set up a community computing lab in the building which will mostly be running Linux. We welcome donations of equipment. We mostly need CAT5 cable at this point. www.batteriesplus.com I looked at the new retail store and talked with the salesperson. If they can't get an exact replacement, they will open up your battery and replace the cells. It's a new (to me) national chain. Thanks, Ron Geoffrion 913.488.7664
I want to thank everybody for their suggestions about procuring laptop batteries locally. I bought a new battery from Batteries Plus and I'm crossing my fingers. Incidentally, there isn't a Batteries Plus store at 95th and Quivira. It's actually on 87th street near Pflumm, just west of I-35. There is another store on the corner of 119th and Black Bob in Olathe. I get my batteries from eBay -- for better or worse. I have had problems, but I'm pretty sure the fault is with my old laptop and not the batteries themselves.

Sweet, I'm going to have to swing by some time. If you don't already have all your software needs covered, I think i've seen some apps at kde-apps.org which may or may not suite your needs.

Good luck... not going through the best of times myself.

Will try.

I buy mine on ebay, or at least did. If you can find original (new) batteries for a good price on ebay, do it. I have had good luck with the seller "Lark Battery". I bought two "re certified" batteries off ebay, and neither would hold much of a charge. They also didn't fit as smoothly as authentic new batteries did. It was a costly mistake. If you are going to use your laptop batteries, spending a little more to get new, and authentic from the laptop manufacturer ones is worth it. Locally I've used a supplier in fairfax called "Wholesale batteries Inc." They are great for UPS and larger batteries. I bought four that I could barely carry for a UPS renovation, and they still run for an hour without draining noticeably with about 10-15A 120v load. Also, Electronic Supply of Kansas City, on Main downtown (816-931-0250) is pretty good but only open during prime business hours. I usually try to buy new batteries online. I found a place by doing a Google search for "ibook batteries" (for an iBook, of course), and found a place that specializes in parts for Apple laptops. The new battery has significantly higher capacity and comes with a decent warranty. Didn't fit the battery slot perfectly, but... (they do fit "well enough") They gave several choices, differing in capacity and price, but all less expensive than originals, and with higher capacity. I do like the idea of rebuilding them yourself, or taking them to Batteries Plus, but that may not be least expensive, especially if you blow something up, but it should be ok for someone who takes reasonable care and has some skill. More fun, of course. If the batteries on eBay are new and come with warranty, that may be ok, but may also be more expensive than third party batteries like I found, depending on brand. --Don Ellis On Mar 5, 2008, at 11:17 AM, Billy Crook wrote:
