So the screen flickers? This in reaction to your trying to
Alt-F1? I assume then that you can toggle the num-lock key?

For starters you might try changing it boot up without using
gdm. Change inittab to use 3 instead of 4 and reboot. That
will tell if it is an X problem, or something lower level
than that.
