Subject: Mac OS X Question

I'm considering a new Mac purchase. When I do buy it, it will run OS 10.2
and, as I understand, this is a BSD Unix distro. My question: Does this mean
that any app that runs in Linux will run on a Mac running OS X?

Do I just jump into Terminal and install the packages? Can I run Gnome or
KDE on a Mac?

Thanks,
