I have experienced similar problems with telnet and ftp over tcp/ip.
<lucky for me, ftp to sunsite usually hangs rather quickly compared to
other sites)

Occasionally telnet will stop printing characters to me (although it
still sends my characters across), and ftp will occasionally hang.

More Importantly, I have found that telnet ALWAYS will allow me to

exit the host I was connected to by typing the appropriate
    commands.<although I cannot see them>

    THEN, magically it
prints all (or a good portion at least) of the data which was not
getting sent while the connection hung, and then the Connection Closed
      Message.

Once I exit the connection, it looks as if nothing ever went wrong.

Could this be a flushing problem with telnet and/or tcp/ip??
