After some hardware digging, I found out that the modem UART is a 82C50A--
note that this is for an Everex 2400 modem. This is an internal hayes compatable. Is it possible that there are other modem manufactures that are using
the same type of UART??? Any information on this beast would be appreciated.

Thus far I have recompiled the kernel normally (0.96c), and tried combinations of
rearranging the defines for the UARTS in tty.h and commenting out the 'switch' statement found in the serial.c procedure 'init'. This was to force the UART to
be an 8250. BTW, the comments were immediately before the switch, and immediately after the else... So far, other than determining the UART type, I am running out of leads. :(
